The glass used for fusing must all have the same "coefficient of expansion" (COE) or thermal expansion rate. That is it must expand and contract at the same rate so that the finished pieces do not crack as they cool. We use a pre-tested "compatible" glass. Therefore all of our off-cuts are compatible. We use System 96 glass for all of our fusing.
We have been working with fused glass since 1996 and have generated a lot of off-cuts (scrap). We keep it all, and
have literally tons of it.
So... what does one do with all that scrap? Recycle....but not in the usual sense...
Junk de Verre Collage
A pile of off-cuts always contains a lot of interesting and unique shapes. There are a few glass cuts that are "impossible"
using a hand-held glass cutter, notably deep concave curves and narrow "wasp waist" shapes. But these sorts of shapes appear regularly in the
off-cuts and can be the starting point for a Junk de Verre collage. Each collage is definitely "one of a kind", and is a great
opportunity to explore colour and design. They are also a lot of fun.
Here are some examples of scrap glass used to make beautiful and unique "Junk de Verre" pieces (Click to enlarge):

Junk-de-Verre Collage pieces are only available at Studio Glass, in Maitland, Nova Scotia. Canada
